Wore this Burberry dress tonight for date night at Trattoria Cinque in Tribeca

Hey Girls,

Date night with husband outfit. Burberry dress, Nina booties, Brooks Brothers purse, grandma's bracelet :)
I sooo loved the Ravioli di Brasato braised short rib stuffed pasta at Trattoria Cinque in Tribeca, a very cool spot, "where there is a “5” discipline to showcase the five best of everything in Italian cuisine" pics of Trattoria Cinque, http://tc5nyc.com/
Even though it was 20 degrees out tonight I wore this cute Burberry dress with a United Colors of Benneton sweater and my jacket, but I def showed off the dress at dinner and I can't wait to wear this dress more often when it warms up.  :) ~Isobella

Commercial print modeling; the need for print models of all types of models is rising

Hey Girls,

As I mentioned on this weeks Model Talk Radio segment, called The Modeling Forecast of 2011,  how commercial print has always been about the model to relate to the consumer. That hasn't changed, but with more products out there, the need for print models of all types of models I think is rising. The smile, the personality, the real’ness is the trend, and more than ever I notice how humanistic is in with ads and campaigns of all types.

Some campaigns that stand out that show how the world is becoming more humanistic and relating to pop culture are:

J.Crew with the scruffy model, with a bead and long hair, model Will Lewis.

The new voice of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is a homeless man, Ted Williams, a former panhandler from Columbus, Ohio.

http://www.wonderbra.com/ The girls are pretty but not all sticks.

The real’ness is becoming the trend. From Gap teeth to plus size models, being themselves is something that models are being hired for.

And anytime a too skinny chick is modeling a fashion item the Internet punch pads of females in America goes hay wire! Tapping out their frustration and making me believe that the humanistic model is going to prevail.

Be true to yourself. Celebrate your unique'ness, and your assets, aim high and strive!

Favorite Little Thing: Have you ever seen a goat being born? Beekman 1802

(this photo is from Planet Green -DCI, where you can check out the show The Fabulous Beekman Boys)

Hey Girls,

So, I got this mailer from Williams-Sonoma about an Artisans market event this weekend, Saturday Jan. 8th (at their Columbus Circle, NYC, location in the Time Warner Center, 10 Columbus Circle).  While reading the mailing I noticed Beekman 1802.  Mmmm, I checked out the Beekman 1802 website about their farm, and was looking at the animals section, and it might sound weird, but watching these two baby goats be born, made my day, -go ahead check it out here.

The Beekman farm, near Sharon Springs, N.Y, is run by two city guys who bought a farm. At the Beekman organic farm the Beekman Boys, Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, also create chemical-free handmade goat milk soaps, the milk is from their own goats. :)  Mmmm sounds good. There are also llamas on the farm. You might have heard of these guys before. On the Discovery Channels' Plant Green The Fabulous Beekman Boys?

If you want to check them out, also see these pictures from The New York Times of the farm and house ( I mean mansion) and this story in the NYT about their venture.

Josh Kilmer-Purcell, is an author you might already know, remember his New York Times bestselling book
I Am Not Myself These Days? With the goldfish on the cover?

Well, he also wrote about his and Brent Ridge's unlikely journey from New York City to becoming farmers with 60 goats. Check it out: THE BUCOLIC PLAGUE: HOW TWO MANHATTANITES BECAME GENTLEMEN FARMERS- An Unconventional Memoir. Sounds interesting and inspiring, I plan to read this book. :)

A book with the word unconventional in the title, is my style.

Anyways, I hope you can check out the Beekman 1802 goods at the Artisans market event this weekend at Williams-Sonoma  in Columbus Circle. These are some soaps from the Beekman farm that I wanted to share with you. They would make good Valentines Day Gifts. Btw, I like their monthly choices of soap, since I got married in July, I will probably pick up the July soaps awwww!

Scent of Autumn Soap

Scent of Winter Soap

Scent of Spring Soap

Scent of Summer Soap

And July soap!

I hope you check these soaps out and the other Beekman Boys goods, and as always, aim high and strive,- I love the little guy!

What is a model casting and what is a go-see? Answered

Hey Girls,

A girl on Facebook recently asked me what a go-see was, knowing these model terms are a good idea if you are pursuing modeling and while working with agencies.  However an agency never really told me what a go-see was or the difference, I just observed and learned as I went along.

A go-see is like a model casting, but instead of just showing up without prior notice, meaning for a "casting" the client doesn't know your name ahead of time or what you look like, you just show up and usually there are many or can be masses of girls. For a go-see the client has reviewed the talent/models they want to see at the casting ahead of time( the client prob saw a photo of you from comp cards the agency has sent the client or the website of the agency ahead of time), so for a go-see the client KNOWS you are coming, knows your name, what you look like and is expecting you.

Usually expecting you at a certain time.

Go-sees tend to have less traffic, less models, and the client has already seen photos before hand and has already narrowed down the girls/models they want to see. So you will be going to see a client, a marketing professional, an editor, a photographer, a casting director, etc. who ever is casting the job, to see if you are what they are looking for, for the job.
So when you get to the go-see typically your name will be on a list already waiting to be checked off.

A casting can more likely have more girls attending, but not always, it all depends.

**Sometimes agents just call castings a go-see as well.

I have been asked this before by other girls over the years and I did this segment on my Model Talk Radio this past summer on what a go-see is and what a casting is and what a direct booking is. Check it out if you are also curious: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/isobellajade/2010/08/12/modeling-casting-tips-for-short-chicks-and-all-siz

Here is a post I wrote also on what to wear to castings and how to prepare, etc.: http://www.petitemodelingtips.com/2009/10/how-models-can-prepare-for-go-sees-and.html

Always bring your comp cards to your go-sees and castings, and keep one in your bag for last minute castings.  Also you can get 10% off modeling comp cards at Fairway Printing in NYC http://www.modelingcards.com/ just mention Isobella Jade :)

Gary Shteyngart doesn't think I'm that short

Hey Girls,
Well, this year I am making an effort to go to events I might not have typically been expected to be at, to learn and discover new authors and books. This week I went to my first romance reading, and last night I went to a science-fiction event. I am not die-hard science fiction but I think it is a good idea to get a taste for all types of genre's writing and books, as a writing I can appreciate the creativity involved in writing and passion author have for their work.  Last night went to the NY Review of Science Fiction event at the SoHo Digital Art Gallery and authors Rick Moody and Gary Shteyngart read from their cool books. While he was reading, I imagined Rick Moody's book THE FOUR FINGERS OF DEATH, as a concept for a movie actually (like a Tom Hanks in Cast Away only instead of Wilson the volleyball it's Saratoga the space craft he is communicating with). When Rick mentioned the Mars explorer called the Saratoga Originally launched by the United States of America in 2019, (I couldn't help but think of how enchanting the name of the craft sounded and what came to mind was a memory of  going to Saratoga Springs when I was teen in Upstate NY). Anyways, in the book Four Fingers of Death, Jim is on Mars and he has encountered the long lost Saratoga craft.  Now although I am tech savvy when I heard about Jim checking out the Saratoga and noticing, "a small forgotten panel in the Saratoga slid back, and a punch pad appeared," I thought of actually a punching bag! It didn't click with me until the Saratoga and Jim started communicating when, "Jim found himself hoping against hope that the keypad would be both numerical and alphabetical, because if he couldn’t talk to the Saratoga in English, he didn’t know what he was going to do."

Rick did a great job reading, so good I almost forgot about the guy who sat near me who reeked of grime and God knows what, and I told Rick I enjoyed this reading and his eyebrows kind of arched when I mentioned that I will be writing about him on a modeling blog. haha.

Also, both authors needed water before they read, it was getting hot as hell at the SoHo Digital Art Gallery which is a small space. Having water before reading at an event is nornal, but it was funny because Rick Moody whipped off his sweater and plead for water and the gallery people had to hunt for the water before he read.

Rick Moody gulping down water before his reading of  The Four Fingers of Death.

Gary Shteyngart drinking water before reading from his book Super Sad True Love Story.

I got Gary's book SUPER SAD TRUE LOVE STORY, which is about a future functionally illiterate America, also Gary mentioned while reading that this could actually be next week, ha, the characters in the book all have these devices around their necks which tell others their stats for how smart they are, how good they are at romance, etc.. Actually I have thought about this before, what if you were at a coffee shop, bar, the subway, and you could see on the train the characteristics of the person around you, all based on a device they wear around their neck or an ID card that shares their pro's and con's, their stats for being thoughtful, kind, their hobbies, interests, etc. Not that this would be good or bad, but just the thought of it, haha. Anyways when Gary mentioned that this was an aspect in his book I became intrigued! He also mentioned the main character Lenny is short. I found it interesting that the characters are afraid of the smell of books and live in a world that is anti-books (especially with the changes and add-ons in publishing and digital publishing these days.  His book has been called "a Romeo and Juliet for our wobbly age" by Kiran Desai and watch the book trailer.

Also while Gary signed his book for me, of course I commented on how his character is "short" and plugged how short I was and that I was a petite model and author and advocate for the shorties, and he said "all my characters are short!" And he told me I wasn't that short, hehe aww of course then I gave him a copy of my modeling memoir Almost 5'4" :)

Ok Girls, so I know science fiction may not be your thing, and I didn't think it was my thing when I walked into the event, but I gained a new respect for science-fiction this week.

~Isobella Jade

P.s: On Amazon and BN.com you can read an excerpt from both books, sometimes it is nice to discover new authors, new writing styles and voices and the creativity involved with picking up a book you might not have typically considered:  Here's Rick Moody's The Four Fingers of Death or on his website.
And Gary Shteyngart's : Super Sad True Love Story

Casting Confessions: Preparing for a shoe modeling casting

Hey Girls,

I am preparing for a shoe modeling casting today, first I Google the brand, what do their shoes look like? I like to know ahead of time before I go to the casting what I am "walking into."  My legs are shaven and I actually like to get pedicures the day of my castings if possible so my pedicure is super pretty and fresh!

In the winter I usually wear tights but since I will be trying on some high heels and fancy shoes I will prob wear tights that go just to my ankles and then also socks and then take off the socks at the casting to try on the shoes. Usually the client likes to see your legs and ankles and of course toes, so I am still debating whether tights or socks, because the shoes for this casting looked fancy, colorful, dress-up, so wearing a bare toe. Sometimes at castings you show up and things change. You could show up in tights but the client may ask you to go and change and be bare leg, or it is ok if you keep your tights on, it all depends on the type of shoes you will be trying on and what the client is looking for.

I will keep you posted on how it goes,

The night my perspective on romance novels was enhanced by Lady Jane's Salon reading series

So tonight I went to this romance reading at Madame X on Houston St. And tonight I bought my first ever romance novels. Met and got books signed by Lisbeth Eng and Delilah Marvelle. I don't know if I could become obsessed with romance novels but I dig the detail and historic storyline in many of them.

It was fun listening to Delilah Marvelle, KT Grant & Lisbeth Eng.

I had a cool chat with Deliah :) and bought her book and also Lisbeth's book because I honeymooned in Italy and I love Italy.

I hope this inspires you to check out romance novels.  I may not become die-hard romance novel but it was def a memorable experience to attend the Lady Jane Salon event. Next month is their 2 year anniversary!! http://www.ladyjanesalon.com/

About the event:

February 8, 2004   8:34 a.m.
The cash in my purse proves I made a shit load of money last night at SugarPlum’s.  But something happened, something bad.  I remember a gun shot, burning heat, and then an open mouth coming towards me with large white teeth.  And now I feel pain on the back of my neck, and there's a gash on my cheek and my jaw feels swollen.  I’m trying to remember the details but I can’t remember shit!  It seems like a dream.  Today I woke up on a strange couch. I was wearing this red robe. I had a flashback of the man with the white teeth bringing me here.  Then when I stood up to leave he appeared from the darkness. His face was all I could see. It was pale and his eyes were dark and his dark hair was slicked back. His said his name was Von and that last night he had helped me. Von sounded like the weirdest name ever.  When he spoke I could remember only pieces of what he told me last night, something about how the life I had lived before was gone. And now I’d have to start over.
Von came closer and said I could never go back to my apartment and that my life was different now.

I thought he was kidding, like it was a joke, and he was just trying to scare me.  I felt like I was being held hostage or something, because he wouldn’t let me leave.
I fell back to sleep for a little while on the couch and when I woke up Von was sitting next to me. He gave me a clear teacup with a real red rose pedal floating in it and said it was his favorite tea.  It was pretty and smelled good, and for a moment I thought he was being romantic. It wasn’t every day that a man made me tea. But I quickly learned he was just being nice.  Von told me that the tea would help with my pain and the transformation.  For a moment I was kind of worried the tea was actually poison or something since his eyes never left me and he made sure I drank it all. He said I needed time to heal from the attack.
Von’s apartment is very dark, since there are dark curtains blocking the sun and dark walls and dark colored furniture, it’s kind of like a cave.   But it’s cozy here actually, I don’t want to leave. It’s freezing outside. Especially since I’m still kind of out of it.
What is strange is that Von was wearing sunglasses inside. And he told me not to go near the window since it would hurt my raw skin.  I thought he was kidding and laughed.  That’s when Von took off his sunglasses.  I could see his grey eyes, long, long lashes, soft lips and pale glowing skin.  He spoke even more seriously and told me he was a vampire and then said that I was now a vampire.  It was kind of funny. It didn’t make sense. How could I be dancing at Sugarplum’s less than 8 hours ago and now be a vampire? It just doesn’t fully make sense.
But Von said over time it would make sense and that I might one day be thankful for my extra time here.
I also thought it was funny that we both had names with a V.  But Von didn’t seem to care. He was so serious, didn’t smile, and was quick and short with his words. He said I could keep my first name, but changing my last name would be a good idea since the cops might be looking for me to question me about last night.
Von told me I would remember the attack over time, and that I would probably have nightmares of it forever. Oh great!
So, I am on his couch and trying to think of a new last name today. Von says he knows someone at the DMV that can help me get a new ID and new social security card quickly.  He said I might want to consider getting a passport.
I’ve sat here all day and I’m rested, but where is he? Shit! I don’t even have his cell phone number. Damn! I don’t even have my cell phone; I must have lost it last night. It's probably gone forever.

~Viv

February 8, 2004   11:34 p.m.
When Von came home tonight I found out some details about the attack.
Basically last night was crazy.  I almost died. If it wasn’t for him, I would be dead.
Von told me he was walking down the alleyway next to SugarPlum’s and he could see a man fondling a girl in the distance. Me.  He said the man was balding, had a goatee, and was wearing a leather jacket. Based on Von’s description I am pretty sure the man was Mitch, my boss. That fucker tried to rape me!   Then I started to remember the night more clearly. I had tried to keep $200 I owed the club since Mitch always seemed to stiff me by sending me to his friends who never tipped. I wasn’t just some slut for these jackasses to play with.  One had asked me to even go down on him, yuck, fucking pricks.  I told Mitch about it at the end of my shift, but he hadn’t given a shit, and was actually mad at me. For disrespecting his prick friends!  I probably called him an asshole or something because I remember now that on the way out we ended up bitching in the back alleyway.  That’s when Mitch slammed me against the brick wall.  He had hit me across the face and his hands went places I did not want them to go. But I guess that wasn’t enough for him.
Von told me that by the time he had reached me, Mitch had already shot me in the back of my neck and I was lying in the snow with a faint pulse, and I was choking on my blood, just waiting to die.

But Von had sucked the bullet out of me.  He told me it was from a Beretta .380 pistol, Von pointed to the side table where the pistol was laying on it.  The bullet was next to it. The pistol had been sitting there all day and I had not even noticed it.  Von said he grabbed it from Mitch’s hands while in the process of getting rid of him. Von said Mitch is gone and he won’t be back.  Von probably killed him. Threw him in a dumpster or something. Ate him.  I don’t even want to know.  The pistol grip is wood and has an owl carved on it. And although the pistol had just about killed me, it’s kind of cute and the owl wood carving is unique, and I want to keep it and Von said I could have it.
The more Von spoke about the attack, the more I remembered.
I remember lying in the cold snow, shivering even though every cell in my body was burning from being shot. I remembered Von’s mouth coming near me, his venom seeping into my flesh, the back of my neck feeling hot like fire and then darkness.
Von said there was a lot of blood gushing out of my neck. But he had already gotten his blood fix for the evening and didn’t want to leave me in the snow like that.  He carried me back to his place. He didn’t ask if I had wanted to live when he saved me.  But tonight after he told me all this, he asked if it was ok that he saved my life?
I really didn’t know what to say.
A lot has happened in less than 24 hours and I believe in fate and timing. Like being in the right place at the right time. And I am young and there is more to do, I just don’t know what I want to do. Or what I am supposed to do now.
I thought my life was over, but it seems like it’s actually just begun.

Casting Confessions: beauty casting

A recent experience from a casting for a beauty company.

"Hey how'ya doing?" I said to the man behind the desk, he says "hi" and asks for me name. I tell him and he scans his sheet and finds my name, then he tells me to sign-in, and take off any jewelry and to pull my hair back into a ponytail and that I shouldn't have any eye-shadow on. I wave my head around my face making a gesture like a magician and say, " Ok cool, I just have on some powder and mascara." He tells me, and also the room, that outside there is makeup remover pads.

I take a seat and take off my heavy winter coat and hat and gloves. I take off some of my lip-gloss with a tissue, and wait my turn.

There are a bunch of models already waiting, I notice one Hispanic girl has a lot of makeup on, the rest are pretty Asians, with their hair pulled back, some lip-gloss and glowing skin. I go to the bathroom and take off some powder on my cheeks and under my eyes with a makeup remover pad.

The door of the casting room flings open and another model scurries out and the casting director aka the Lady who is running the casting asks for our attention. She stands in front of us like a college professor sharing an important detail for a test, she wants to tell us what will go on in the casting room so we can prepare, know what’s up and basically be as a fast as possible.

She scans the room and tells a couple girls who have too much makeup on to take it off more. (Side- thought: models who are no teenage fashion models, often have a difficult time taking off their makeup, seeing their raw face without anything at all) The casting director lady tells us that we will be applying eye-shadow; the eye-shadow case doesn’t have a mirror so we will be pretending to be facing a mirror but facing the camera and putting on the eye shadow. I smile, and nod, basic enough. (In my mind I am imagining putting on eye-shadow without looking in a mirror and carefully finding my eye lid and the shape below my eye-brow.) She shares that our hands are important for this (maybe it’s the reason there are not any tall models here? Because hands, like hand models, are important for this one?) I have nice hands and got a manicure that morning so I am all set there, the lady goes on to tell us about the facial expressions we will be doing. She wants a smile with teeth, without teeth, and a look of surprise and a growl face, like a cat with claws. Ok that’s cool.

The next model goes into the casting room and in a few minutes another goes and another.

While I waited my turn I go check my face and since I got my bangs recently cut I make sure they look pretty. While I look at myself in the mirror, I hear the guy at the desk call my name, telling me I am next, on bat, I go back to the mirror real quick and a girl comes up to me and asks if I am Isobella Jade, I say yes, and during the next couple of minutes she told me how she read my book Almost 5’4” and graphic novel Model Life and told me she was so glad to have met me and shared with me about her modeling pursuits. Then my name is called again, it's my turn, and I go into the casting room. I slate my name, smile with teeth, smile without, give a growl, give a profile and put on the eye- shadow. Thanks for coming. I collected my stuff and head out and into to the cold.  No matter if I get the job or not, that moment when that girl came up to me and told me that my efforts and hustle and bustle and not giving up meant something to her made my day.

~Isobella Jade

P.s: I've been asked previously "what happens at a model casting" and here is another casting confession here and here.  At a model casting you only have a few minutes to present yourself and prove you are best for the job. If you enjoy interviews and public speaking, as a model this can be an asset for model castings.  Also being perceptive and able to understand the concept of a campaign, what the client and casting director is looking for, being able to do it in one shot is best, of course you will be nervous I mean shit what if I dropped the eye-shadow applicator, that would not have been good, but castings are mostly quick and easy, smile, thank you, next! Your agent sent you because something in you has a shot for booking the job but sometimes involve complex moments and being confident and being positive is best. Also it is a good idea to bring a hair-tie with you, often for beauty jobs you need to pull your hair back out of your face.

When social issues, advertising and fashion unite

Hey Girls, After hearing about the death of French model Isabelle Caro, I went to research the photographer who shot Isabelle in the "No Anorexia" campaign, Oliviero Toscani.

Oliviero Toscani produces olive oil and breeds horses in Tuscany, and he has shot many advertising campaigns you have most likely seen that have been exposed around the world. He has designed many awesome controversial advertising campaigns for the Italian fashion brand United Colors of Benetton ( I love the Institutional Campaigns Bennetton has done over the years and I also like how if models are used in the campaigns they are all different ethnicities, unconventional, and the models are more humanistic and have a lifestyle appeal. Also I love it when fashion ad campaigns create social awareness about present day social issues). Anyways, Oliviero Toscani is creating a new research facility with La Regione Toscana for modern communication called 'La Sterpia'.

The type of advertising and images in advertisiing that I love have a meaningful message attached to it, I love it when an image tells the story or shares the message, which makes you think, laugh, smile, feel connected not just to the brand but to what the brand stands for, and it touches your heart or stays on your mind. Sometimes it appears in a humanistic style, a shocking, eye-popping way, or with heart or rawness.  You may not totally dig it, but I do. ~Isobella

Are your best assets for modeling being used?

Hey Girls,

Recently a girl told me she was having a hard time noticing her assets as a model.

You can see on the right side there is a list of popular posts and there are tips on photos, submitting to agencies and noticing your assets, however I wanted to tell you that noticing your assets is about noticing what is marketable about you  as a model when it comes to how certain traits or characteristics can be used towards marketing a product, representing the vibe of a brand, or a certain magazine editorial. Noticing your assets is about thinking about what you have that a brand, product or magazine might like, and thinking about how your look can translate into modeling for brands and products and magazines.

When you get booked for a modeling or sent to a casting from an agency your assets are being considered. What you naturally have and if it fits what the client: casting director, art director or editor is looking for. The asset being: what you have that can be marketable and relatable to the brand or magazine which are meeting in hopes of being booked to represent their brand in the campaign, print ad or for an editorial.

An asset is noticing what you have that can be used in modeling in a positive way:
Your smile, skin tone, your energy and personality, your hair, your eyes, etc.

You should know what you have that is marketable as a model. Study ads in magazines, study catalogs, watch commercials, and not just focus on fashion, fashion is misleading for shorter models usually.
An asset is something you consider marketable about you. When you think of product ads, magazine editorials ask yourself: What do I have that would a modeling asset? What makes me great for modeling products, what type of products? What type of magazines could I realistically be in modeling for? What type of commercials and commercial print work get I realistically get?

When you know yourself you can be a better model. You can prepare your photos better and you can market what you have that is marketable better.

It is best to capture these assets within your photos. And also consider the photos that shorter models, aka print models need:  http://www.petitemodelingtips.com/2009/08/commercial-print-modeling-photos-for.html

Most of the time commercial print modeling agencies want to see photos that look like ads, photo that look like you can work with products well and naturally, may it be a beauty product, technology -computer, cell phone, home goods, clothing and accessories. For a shorter girl accessories are best to focus on when it comes to retail fashion items. Commercial print modeling agencies want to see a comp card that shows your close ups, smiling shots and shots with you interacting naturally with products, if you have not been in a product ad yet, create photos with goals in mind that the images need to be ad-inspired as if it is a product ad. Ex: put on a pair of shoes, the logo and brand doesn't matter, the goal is not to create a mock-ad of a brands product, but to show you can model products well...create shots that shows you know how to model the shoe naturally, as if you could for a real ad.

The photos you show equal the jobs you get. I can not stress that enough. You want to model beauty, show beauty shots, you want to model jeans, show jeans shots, you want to work as a commercial print model show personality in your photos, smiling. Inspire the jobs you want to get.

A smile shot is important and after looking at your photos I would make sure you work on some smile shots. Smiling shots show personality and a smile shot represents what a lot of what commercial print modeling is all about.  I hope this helps :)

What are 5 things you can't live without?

Hey Girls,

What are 5 things you can't live without?

Me: Coffee (to feed my creativity), my journal (to vent and dream), mascara (for my vanity), the family photo album that my 90 year old grandfather gave me (to never forget my roots), high heels (it's sort of my trademark). Keep the memories it is what lasts and stays with you :)
