Modeling Castings: before you show up to a model casting here are the details to know

Hey Girls,

Showing up is 90% but before you show up to a model casting here are the details you should pay attention to. When my agency sends me details for a casting it includes these things:

PRODUCT:   What is the casting for? Sometimes the agency will give you the website of the company so you can see what type of products the company has, and what the casting is for.  

CASTING DETAILS: What is the client looking for?  This should tell you more about what the casting is for and what will happen at the casting.  ex: Brunette model with great skin, stomach, legs, for swimwear catalog.  (Knowing this can also help me prepared, although my legs and body should be always camera ready it helps to know what is the focus of the casting and this can help me better prepare. ex. If I know they are going to be looking at legs and the body, then I should be aware not to wear a bra or anything that creates lines on the body before I attend the casting, because I want my body to look it's best.)

DATE:   The date of the casting.  ex. Wednesday, Jan 19

LOCATION:  This should tell you where the casting is, the address, and the name of the person that you are suppose to see at the casting

TIME: time of casting and/ or suggested time you should show up to casting.

RATE:  Is the amount of money the the job will pay excluding the 20% the agency takes out:  ex. $750

USAGE: This tells you where the photos from the photo shoot will be used. Is it is a national, regional ad, global campaign?   ex.  2 years: Online, in print (including national magazines).

This means the images will be used for 2 years for commercial use for print and online and the images could be seen in ads in naitonal magazines.  Knowing the usage of the images is a good thing to know, and you should be given this information if you are booked for the job, if not ask about it.  Also when it comes to collecting proof/tearsheets of your work, you want to know when the images will appear? What month if possible. Is this magazine shoot for their December issue? Is this photo shoot for a fall campaign?

ATTIRE: What to wear to the casting.

SHOOT DATES:  Often agencies will ask you to HOLD the shoot day, just incase you book the job. Or you will be asked to not attend casting if you are not available on the shoot day.
ex. Models MUST BE AVAIL Feb 3 from 9am-5pm! Do not attend casting if you are not available on this days and time.  

It is a good to know as much as you can about the casting before the casting, so your odds for booking the job are better because you were prepared, aim high and strive!

Go see the film The Fighter and why I liked it

Hey Girls,

I suggest going to see the movie The Fighter. I saw it tonight I loved it.

You can read all about it here, but let me also tell you why I liked it. Three things comes to mind.

As a welterweight from the wrong side of the tracks, Irish-American Dicky Eklund is the pride of working class Lowell, Massachusetts. Living in his shadow is his younger half-brother and sparring partner 'Irish' Micky Ward.


Well, it's hard to cram a lot of information and storytelling into a movie and the film was real well done, well edited and shot really well. And you can read more in detail from the above link, the story is about an underdog boxer Micky and his previously successful but now downtrodden boxer older brother Dicky who is considered "the pride of the working class Lowell." But really, it is about a family. A family that wouldn't give up on eachother, through the setbacks, the mistakes, frustration and even moments of betrayal, they had a love that's very obvious in the film.

A part of the film that touched me was when Dicky is missing from the gym, he is suppose to be training his brother Micky, but Dicky is off hanging around these people who influence him to do the wrong thing (do drugs), and when his mother goes to find him she is very upset. In the car Dicky starts singing a song to his mother, who joins in. It was shown in the way Dicky sang it that his mother had forgiven him many times before for his mistakes and always would love him. The song was called "I started a Joke" which is a  Bee Gees song, and The Wallflowers have also sung it.
I started a joke. Which started the whole world crying.

But I didn't see that the joke was on me.
Oh, no, I started to cry. Which started the whole world laughing.
Oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.
I looked at the skies. Running my hands over my eyes.
And I fell out of bed. Hurting my head from things that I said.
Till I finally died. Which started the whole world living.
Oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.

I thought that was a special moment in the film.

The film also made me think about these three things:
One, People who go through really tough times and do even damaging things to themselves and face addictions are still people, and although it takes "will" and a certain attitude and strength to overcome addiction, but if you allow those who have been broken the chance to do what they do best, and use their skills, they can make a difference, change people's lives, inspire people in amazing ways.
Two, When Dicky was giving a pep talk to Micky and was telling him he would do the things he never got to do, this struck me. I think it is a beautiful thing when someone else's success can inspire and uplift another person. I think it is special when you can inspire others to be the best they can be, even if it means you won't be the best anymore.
Three, The cast did an impressive job. Mark Wahlberg as Micky is a great actor, I even said outloud in a whisper to my man "he is really good!" I saw his character as dealing with a lot of emotions at once: caring for his family, his brother and girlfriend, and success which all bump heads, he is self-discoverying, trying-to-do-the-right-thing, and he is aiming high to win, and he played the role so well, (and he put his heart and soul into seeing that the film got made as a producer) plus he took those punches really well! 
Melissa Leo as the Mother to both fighters, plus 7 other children was in way the real heart of the film.
Amy Adams with her swearing and affectionate and concerned character in Charlene (I liked it when she said, did you head body-head-body?) will make you laugh and feel the struggles of facing the family of the man you love sometimes, no matter how perfect or imperfect they are.
Christian Bale as Dicky really did an amazing job, I was really blown away. Without knowing much about Dicky before I saw the film, I already could tell that Christian Bale had the character down so well, and what a character! Christian did such a great job making it humanistic, raw, real, really memorable, it breaks your heart in a way that you smile about afterward for hours (the speech at the end while Micky is in the ring just about made choke up, forehead to forehead). Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale make sure you will never forget Dicky and Micky, even if you don't totally love boxing, the spirit of the characters will stay with you.

I am glad this film was made.

There is nothing better than a film about underdogs and hustling and beating the odds, go see this film!
As someone who knows the underdog life very well, movies and books about people who strive and strive on even when times are tough really stay with me. When you are out there trying to do what you want to do you can find reason for what you do, and also a spirit, from these types of films and books to keep going,

February 19^th, 2004  Almost midnight.  Strange things are happening

So, it’s been over a week and I’m still here in Von’s apartment.  He keeps saying it will be safer if I stay at his place, but I have the feeling he just doesn’t want me to open my mouth and share the details of the night I got shot with anyone. He asked me every day since I’ve been here where I went and who I spoke to.  But typically I just stay in his apartment all day and typically there is absolutely no one I speak to. The longest conversation I’ve had is saying “Thank you” to the grocery store clerk when I couldn’t reach the pasta sauces on the top shelf.  Von has absolutely no food in the fridge besides the few things that I buy for myself.  He is never here to eat dinner with either.

I’m glad he leaves me about $60 a day to survive on.  But usually I don’t spend most of it and just leave it on the table.

Von had someone go to my shitty ex-apartment last week and collect my things. He basically demanded that I couldn’t do it.  I was sooo pissed. I mean having someone who you don’t know go to pick up your underwear and stuff, I felt really invaded. 

But, my stuff is here now. In 5 small cardboard boxes but even though it seems like I moved in, I still don’t feel like this is home.

My purse has its ritual spot and Von has even offered me his bed.

Short Models and Modeling Agencies and finding your chance when your small

Hey Girls,

In the NY Daily News I have spoke a couple times about how models of all sizes can get ahead. It comes down to having the right information and pursuing modeling in the right ways that benefit your own goals and being realistic.  In the article above (you can read it here), I mentioned how shorter girls are an untapped market for the advertising world. Especially since most girls in America stand 5'4" and under, and since advertising campaigns are becoming more humanistic I think we will see more models of all types and sizes in ads and campaigns. However, if a girl wants to pusue modeling she has to know herself, her assets, have her marketing materials together and be a good marketer.

It is tough, when you are starting to pursue modeling and curious about what to do, how to start, and what agencies to pursue, and I get the question often about if there are any modeling agencies that work with short models. The answer is, not really.  The best way for a shorter girl to pursue modeling is to notice her assets, what she has that is marketable, and what she has that makes her a great model? Then there are about 4 steps she needs to take.  Without a doubt and without question she needs professional photos, and needs to create photos that represent her assets and for a shorter girl these photos should show her personality, smile, energy and friendly appeal and should involve modeling a product, a handbag, a shoe, etc, the shots should look like you are a friend girl who can work natrually with commercial every day products, then she needs to make a comp card, then she needs to mail and target print modeling agencies her comp card.

It is work and it is time.

Aim high and strive, bring out your assets that have nothing to do with height and target agencies (print modeling agencies and talent agencies) that are not as obsessive over height and care more about your personality, and other assets, and remember finding your chance is about understanding what you can actually do within modeling, facing the truth, and using your assets to create goals that are full of possibility.

P.s: it might be tough, but I also suggest not being obsessive over fashion, because to get experience modeling for a brand or magazine it might mean adjusting your perception of what you can realistically do as a model.

Does a modeling agency need my social security number? Answered here

A girl on Facebook recently commented on my wall asking: Even if a modeling agency were to sign me, would they need my social security number?

For taxes yes, agencies file taxes and they need your social security number to do so, if you wanted to wait until closer to tax time you could, or until the agency asks, but yes you will need to if you made money from the agency from a modeling job. Your agency needs your SS, and your legal name, address.


Remember to save any modeling job payment receipts. You agency might send you a W9 form to use when filing your taxes. And when filing a W9 you are considered an Individual / Sole Proprietor.

Aspiring models: Focusing on marketable photography

Hey Girls,

Aspiring models should focus on creating marketable photography, because photos are what gets you in the door with a print agency wanting to work with you. It starts with your photos and your comp card, you also want your comp card to show marketable photos because for castings your photos represent what you can do as a model.

Some girls ask me if the portfolio means more than the comp card? The comp card, is more important that the start. Your portfolio grows over time, but your comp card is what you will mail to agencies and creating marketable photos that bring out your best assets in a commercial print friendly style for your modeling comp card should be the main photos when you get in front of the camera. You want to know yourself as a model, how to model, and the photos you need, here is insight on the ever-constant question I get on model photography and striving to create photos that are best for print modeling.

Study what print modeling is and what print modeling photos look like.
The more you know the better you will be. The more you know about where you opportunities are as a shorter girl the better. For a girl under 5'8" it is commercial print modeling. And targeting this area of the industry involves having the right photos and a comp card prepared. Study what print modeling is and know where you fit into the modeling business. (Modeling is about modeling for something and print modeling is all about personality and within print modeling all types of models are used for campaigns, commercials and product ads and catalogs. However you can not work as a print model without the right photos.) Understand the photos you NEED for your success and focus on working with photographers who understand what print modeling is, and understand your photo goals.

Investing in yourself and doing your research  is worth it. 
Research professional photographer's who understand what print modeling is, is very important as well. Do invest in yourself. Your photos are what get you opportunities as a model. Professional photography is best. Save money for better photography, don't wing it, make your photography important. Because in modeling your photos are what attract an agency and also book you work as a model. Your photos matter a lot. You want to create a marketable comp card. If you want to be professional you need professional photos, this doesn't mean trying to be something you are not in your photos, print modeling is about being natural, being yourself, so you can skip the massive styling and cakey makeup. Focus on getting the right photos that fit your goals for modeling.

Practice having your photo taken and practice in front of a mirror being natural.
Before you get in front of the camera practice looking at yourself in the mirror and posing naturally, not forced but modeling a product in a natural way, hold a handbag, a cell phone, model with a product. Work on your natural expressions and study your face. You should know your face well enough to know how your face "feels" when you are facing the camera and what it will look like from the camera's perspective. The mirror is like the camera's perspective so study your facial expressions, and watch what happens to your arms, neck, body, face, when you move and angle your body if a different way or hold a product in different ways. It is also a good idea to have a friend take photos of you naturally with their digital camera, not to use for model photos, but as "learning examples" and as practice as you observe and learn from what was good or bad about your pose or the way you are standing or positioning your body or face.  Becomnig a good model, knowing "how to model" involves knowing yourself, and body and face and how to move your body in a way to make it appear proportioned (and for a shorter girl it can involve making yourself naturally appear longer than you actually are sometimes).

Creating modeling goals helps you skip photo mistakes.
You should think about the photos you want to create and need, before you get in front of the camera. Again, your photographer should know what print modeling is and understand the type of photos you need and that a print agency wants to see. You should be planning to create a comp card that is marketable so that when you mail it to the print agency the agency will contact you. Sure, after the photo-shoot for your comp card images you can ask yourself, "does this photo represent my modeling goals and the type of work I want to get and can realistically get?" but really you should have already planned marketable photos, know what you need and not have to wonder if the photo is marketable, you should already know what is and isn't a marketable photo.

Petite of the Week is Iya from the Phillippines

PETITE OF THE WEEK

Petite of the Week is Iya, 21 year old, 5'3", from the Phillippines, here is what she says about being petite and striving as a model, Being in an industry where appearance plays a huge part in making it big, I also had my share of rejections because I am petite. That did not stop me though from doing what I'm passionate about. I was able to put up with bullying from grade school to high school and thus, I can handle rejections with my chin up. Rejections makes me stronger in proving to myself that I am worthy being booked as the model for the job. My advice to everyone especially to models is to love what you are doing and it will love you back.
